چکیده

The major plasma lipids, cholesteryl ester, triacylglycerol, cholesterol and phospholipid, are insoluble in water. They are transported in the circulation as lipoproteins-metabolically diverse macromolecules in which the various lipids are associated with specific polypeptides (the apoproteins). There are four main lipoprotein classes, defined by their size and by the density range within which they float in the ultracentri uge: chylomicrons, very-low-density (VLDL), low-density (LDL) and high-density (HDL) lipoproteins (Jackson et al., 1976). The individual lipoproteins vary widely in size, and in lipid and apoprotein composition, but in normal subjects appear to have a similar structure. They are roughly spherical particles with a hydrophobic core of mainly triacylglycerol and cholesteryl ester. Their surface is covered by a single layer of amphipathic molecules (phospholipid, cholesterol and one or more varieties of apoproteins) with small amounts of cholesteryl ester and triacylglycerol also present. Non-covalent mainly hydrophobic forces stabilize the lipoproteins, but exchange and transfer of their constituent lipids and apoproteins can occur during metabolism. The major physiological function of lipoproteins is transport of lipid for delivery to cells and tissues (Owen & McIntyre, 1982). But lipoproteins also affect cellular metabolism in two other ways: they help maintain a normal cell membrane lipid composition and they regulate certain cellular processes (Owen, 198 1).

Evaluation of plasma lipids and lipoproteins in patients with psoriasis

Psoriasis is an epidermal disease characterized by chronic relapsing papillon squamous erythematous plaques which may develop in the skin of elbows, knees and extensor surfaces. The cause of psoriasis is unknown. The primary etiologic factor may be related to excessive uncontrolled synthesis is resulting from changes in (1) the function of growth factors ( EGF),(2) presence of proto- oncogenes,...

Functions and interrelationships of different classes of plasma lipoproteins.

Lipids and Their Functions in Human Physiology.-Plasma lipoproteins transport the biologically important lipid compounds: triglycerides, phospholipids, cholesterol, and cholesteryl esters. Insight into the function of plasma lipoproteins may be obtained, in part, from available information on the physiologic functions of these major classes of lipids. Briefly these functions include the followi...

Infrared studies of protein-induced perturbation of lipids in lipoproteins and membranes.

The paper reviews the main recent publications concerning infrared (IR) spectroscopy as applied to the study of lipid-protein interactions in model and cell membranes, lipoproteins, and related systems (e.g. lung surfactant). The review focuses mainly on transmission IR. Based on the available data, a number of general conclusions are presented on the perturbations caused by proteins on either ...

The origin and properties of free cholesterol potential gradients in plasma, and their relation to atherogenesis.

The aqueous solubilities of most lipids in lipoproteins are so low that their transfer between lipoproteins and cell membranes depends on random (collision) or specific (receptor-mediated) physical interaction between donor and acceptor interfaces, or the activity of transfer proteins which serve to increase the solubility of lipids in the aqueous phase (1). However, the solubility of cholester...
